Do You Remember Your First Backpack?

Some things fade as we grow older — the taste of candy we once loved, the scrapes on our knees, the names of kids we used to play with. But for some reason, certain memories stay longer. Like the image of a worn, slightly too-big backpack we once called our own.

It probably wasn’t expensive. Maybe it was clumsy or faded, with a zipper that sometimes got stuck. But in your memory, it marked the start of something new.

As children, we were always eager to mimic grown-ups. And carrying a backpack felt like such a big deal. It wasn’t just for holding notebooks — it held tiny treasures too. A crumpled drawing, a biscuit from grandma, a pebble from the playground. It was our little world, zipped up and carried on our backs.

Some people are lucky — their first backpack was captured in a photo or even saved in a closet. For others, it lives only in a blur of childhood colors and shapes. But the warmth of that memory? That stays.

Now, as adults, we carry more bags than we can count. Briefcases, handbags, diaper bags, laptop cases. They’re full of things — work, keys, devices. But few of them carry the simple joy of that first backpack.

And now, as you choose a first backpack for your own child, perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of your younger self in their tiny steps. The way they proudly wear it. The way they tug the straps tight. The way they ask, “Is this mine?”

A child’s life is full of firsts — the first day of school, the first goodbye at the classroom door, the first time they forget their bag, or fall asleep with it on the car ride home. The first backpack is where many of those stories begin.

It doesn’t need to be expensive. It doesn’t need to be perfect.
It just needs to be loved — by them.
